ONYCHOCRYTOSIS

"Onychocryptosis" is the medical term for an ingrown toenail. It occurs when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, leading to pain, inflammation, and sometimes infection. This condition is common and can affect any toe, but it most often occurs in the big toe. Causes of ingrown toenails include improper nail trimming, wearing tight shoes, injury, and genetic predisposition.

Symptoms of onychocryptosis may include pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes drainage of pus. In severe cases, infection may spread, leading to more serious complications.

Treatment for ingrown toenails may include soaking the foot in warm water, gently lifting the ingrown edge of the nail, and keeping the area clean. In some cases, a healthcare professional may need to perform a minor surgical procedure to remove the ingrown portion of the nail.

It's important to seek medical attention if you suspect you have an ingrown toenail, especially if there are signs of infection or if you have diabetes or other conditions that affect blood flow to the feet, as these conditions can increase the risk of complications.
