ONYCHOLYSIS

Onycholysis is a medical term that refers to the separation of the nail plate from the nail bed. This condition typically starts at the tip of the nail and progresses towards the cuticle. As a result, a gap forms between the nail and the underlying nail bed. Onycholysis can affect one or more nails and may occur on both fingernails and toenails.

Common causes of onycholysis include:

1.  Trauma: Physical injury or trauma to the nails, such as repetitive tapping or hitting, can lead to onycholysis.

2.  Fungal Infections: Fungal infections of the nails, such as onychomycosis, can cause onycholysis. Fungi can invade and weaken the nail structure.

3.  Psoriasis: This chronic skin condition can also affect the nails, causing onycholysis in some cases.

4.  Chemical Irritants: Exposure to harsh chemicals, including some nail care products, can lead to onycholysis.

5.  Allergic Reactions: Allergic reactions to certain nail products or materials can contribute to the separation of the nail plate.

6.  Systemic Diseases: Certain systemic conditions, such as thyroid disorders and autoimmune diseases, may be associated with onycholysis.

7.  Medications: Some medications may cause onycholysis as a side effect.

If you suspect onycholysis, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional or a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. The underlying cause needs to be identified and addressed to manage and resolve the condition effectively. Treatment may include addressing any underlying medical conditions, avoiding potential irritants, and practicing good nail care.
